In 1972, BMW unveiled the first-generation BMW 5-Series sedan, numbered E12, at the IAA Motor Show. Only two models were introduced first – the 520 and 520i, both of which used the four-cylinder engine numbered M10. In 1973, BMW introduced the 145-horsepower BMW 525 with a six-cylinder engine. A year later, due to the impact of the oil crisis, the 518, the entry-level model in the 5 series with only 90 horsepower, was also introduced into the 5 series. The new 5 Series four-door mid-size sedan was introduced in 1972 as a direct successor to the “new class” model of the BMW 1500-2000. As the production capacity of the Munich plant was no longer sufficient to meet the projected production requirements, BMW built a new specially designed plant in Dingolfing, Lower Bavaria.
The second-generation 5 Series has a very beautiful body design, better streamline, stronger safety, and higher driving comfort.
